Costs of Online Learning

I’ve been doing some analysis recently of the costs of a fully online master’s degree program from a major research university (which for the moment will remain nameless, although this has been a very successful program, both academically and financially). I was doing this for our forthcoming book.

Changing Cost of Open Access

Kent Anderson has a new post discussing the changing costs of open access. From the post:

The likelihood that fixed costs — editorial salaries, internal systems, and software licenses in the small scale; redesigns, content migrations, and device support in the large scale — will only increase for digital publishers is driving expenses in much the same way interest charges drive the cost of a loan. Over time, the costs add up.

Mendeley and Openness

Jason Hoyt, Chief Scientist for the citation program Mendeley, posted several days ago affirming their support of open access. In the comments section of the post, questions arose regarding just how open Mendeley itself was. “Petermr” blogs his disatisfaction (post 1, post 2). “iPhylo” responds.
