I’m not sure the author of the Guardian’s piece understands the point of Michael Nielsen’s talk, as the author’s main argument is that open science
won’t work under the current academic evaluation system. This is correct, but that is why the open science community is focused on developing alternative metrics of evaluation. For more on both see this post from Cameron Neylon: http://tiny.cc/51at0.

I do not believe free things in the world.
Nothing is free.
To finance a project with donation is an invitation to unsustainability.
Some projects can be financed by advertisement and some products may be offerred free like Google services.
Free textbooks from cradle to grave in any language sounds good. But only sounds good.
If a book is $ 100 retail price only $ 10 goes to author. Then I am willing to offer books at $ 10 per year license.

I’m glad Google promotes copyright protection when it comes to videos. However, they copied huge chunks of two of my trade paperbacks and posted them on the Internet. They didn’t ask me or any of the thousands of other authors they did this to.
