There have been a few updates in the ongoing Google Book Settlement discussion. Wired is reporting that the Electronic Privacy Information Center is opposing the settlement on privacy grounds. InformationWeek is reporting that the Author’s Guild issued a statement calling Amazon’s opposition “hypocrisy.” Gavin Baker at Open Access News indicates that the deadline for comments has been extended to Sept. 8, 10 am EST. From the InformationWorld article:
The Authors Guild defends the settlement as a way to make millions of out-of-print books available again and notes that Google will not have exclusive rights to those books. “The agreement opens new markets, and that’s a good thing for readers and authors,” the group said.
